Matt Tapscott
Broker/Owner

Matt Tapscott is an oasis in the real estate industry. The Broker/Owner of Expoint Realty in Palm Springs exudes spiritualism, wisdom and a level of warmth you can really only find in the desert.

A native of Los Angeles, California, Matt grew up drawn to entrepreneurialism but his focus took many forms before shifting to real estate including import/export, founding, expanding and eventually selling a shipping and packaging chain and an industry leading software company for the indoor air quality industry. Yet even while Matt pursued other avenues, real estate abided as a personal passion from the time he bought his first home at 23. Throughout the years, Matt bought and sold countless properties, renting some and renovating others to reflect his simplistic yet whimsical style.

It wasn’t until Matt moved to Palm Springs and witnessed the acquisition of some sought after land that he found his way into the professional side of real estate. Curious about the finesse required of such a deal, Matt called the developer and formed a fast friendship which resulted in his being offered one of two positions selling $110 million worth of high-end condominiums.

Eventually Matt and a partner set out on their own, forming Expoint Realty, a boutique real estate agency that prides itself in providing personal service throughout the Coachella Valley. Today, Matt is the company’s sole owner and broker, personally mentoring the few agents he hand-picks to join his team. “I look for traits in them beyond experience, which will come,” said Matt. “I look for a genuine passion about real estate and this exciting business we are in and a love of people and of being of service.”

Because Expoint represents buyers and sellers from all ends of the spectrum, Matt is able to focus on his favorite part of real estate – client interaction. “Whether they are first time homebuyers, celebrities or my neighbors, I always find something I can relate to with people,” explained Matt. “I enjoy learning about people and what makes them exceptional and how that influences their needs and preferences specific to real estate. Relationships are built on communication and listening is a vital function of communication. If you listen, clients will tell you what they want and how you can deliver.”

Although Matt works hard and knows the value of being accessible to his large client base, he has a remarkable perspective on the importance of a balanced lifestyle that stems from some life-changing advice he got at just 16. “A family friend saw a quality in me that revealed I would be an entrepreneur and told me that I should never identify myself as an individual with what I did for a living. That really resonated with me. I understood that you can enjoy what you do but you should not forget who you are as a person.”

That worldview has carried over into Matt’s career as well. “I have enjoyable transactions because I don’t sit around counting commissions but instead focus on how to satisfy people as individuals and connect with them. The result is joyful transactions that segue into friendships.”

Matt’s clients know him as being extraordinarily patient with a unique ability to see life in the long-term, a trait that has significance in his personal life as well as a long distance cyclist who has biked across the United States (West to East) and the Great Divide (Canada to Mexico). “There’s a real sense of satisfaction in that, a feeling of getting back to who you are.” For Matt, that means a life where real estate and relationships, each nurtured in turn, matter most, in perfect balance with one another.

In addition to his 20 plus years in Real Estate, Matt has launched retail pack & ship outlets in Los Angeles, an import company and small software company for the indoor air quality industry. He has cycled through several countries in Asia, across the Northern Tier of the United States and most recently in 2010, completed the “Divide Ride” beginning in Canada and ending in Mexico, a route as remote as it is difficult transversing the Continental Divide a total of 29 times with over 200,000 feet of elevation gain… Matt is a full time resident of Palm Springs.
